Are you ready for Comic Con?!
From Comic to Cosplay
Comic is the common term used to describe the representation of a story in a sequence of images. As usually these illustrated stories are combined with text and create an independent art form in a symbiosis of visual art and literature. When we think of comics, we probably think of a modern entertainment booklet that targets children and nerds. The origins of comics can be found in antiquity. Even centuries ago, for example, the harvesting and processing of grain or the course of battles were told in a series of pictures. After the invention of the printing press, the illustrated story was used more as a joke and caricature tool, followed by the fast rise in the 19th century. It was at this time that the comic began to be used to tell more complex stories. The previously short comic strips became longer and soon filled entire booklets. In 1929 the first adventure comics came onto the market. These opened up a whole new world of excitement and action. DC Comics was founded in 1934 and just four years later Marvel Comics followed. Of course, no one knew that it would be the first time that the most important and largest American comic book publishers would see the light of day. Their invented universes would shape many generations.

Even today, the printed comics continue to tell their never-ending story of heroism, adventure and science fiction without breathing a sigh of relief, but a new medium is worth our full attention. Just as the latest comics from Flash Gordon, Captain America or Batman once ensured a sold-out newsstand, today the Battle of the Avengers, Spiderman's Self-Discovery or Joker's latest infamous crimes ensure full cinemas and ringing tills. With the movie Endgame the Marvel universe as we know it now ends and a new era is about to begin. For the general public forgotten comic darlings of the 60s like Captain Marvel, Black Panther and Adam Warlock (reference: post credit scene Guardians of the Galaxy 2) now come to light and mark a new phase in the world of cinema heroes. The possibilities of our time create an almost endless offer, which ranges from Batman sheets to Ironman toothbrushes to Guardians of the Galaxy lunch boxes and places the comic book heroes in our everyday life. Several spin off series fill the streaming services and even some roller coasters in the Disney parks take us on a journey that once began in a comic book.

Without the colorful picture stories there would probably be no cosplay today. The neologism from the terms costume and play refers to the most faithful reproduction possible of a character from film, comic, manga, and video game or similar. The trend sloshed from Japan into the western world in the late 90s. Of course there are always movie-inspired costumes for carnival and Halloween on the streets of Germany to watch, but Cosplay has pretty little to do with this. On one hand because the cosplay artists wear their costumes to comic con or gaming events and on the other hand because the cosplayer dives completely into the role of the character. With a lot of love every detail of the character is realized, behavior is rehearsed and for example possible fighting techniques for show purposes are practiced. The elaborate costumes, which match the original down to the smallest detail, are often handmade by the actors. In the meantime, some manufacturers also offer complete sets that meet these requirements.
